The ultimate expression of Volkswagenâs ambitions for its third-generation Beetle, the 2012 Beetle Turbo was designed to shake off the cutesy reputation that had stuck to some of its predecessors.
With the 1997-launched New Beetle not having seen a major makeover during its entire lifespan, the German marque made up for lost time in 2012, creating a sharper, sportier look that paid due deference to the original bug. As a result, the Turbo cut a more aggressive, squat figure, with its rear spoiler, 18-inch alloys, chrome accents, and dual exhausts leaving little room for doubt about its pretentions.
Most importantly though, it had the distinction of being the nippiest production Beetle in the ubiquitous modelâs seven-decade history, sharing as it did the Golf GTIâs 197-bhp 2.0-liter turbo powerplant which, in conjunction with its six-speed manual transmission, could take this beast of a bug flying from 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds and to a top speed of 140 mph.
